PAIN MANAGEMENT
First and foremost we must
remember why we experience pain. It is one of our nervous system's
protective mechanisms. The sensation of pain is designed to warn us
of danger or damage to our bodies. If we don’t experience pain and
are not alerted to a physical problem, we then
risk greater injury or
even death in some instances. But what happens when the issue is
resolved or at least treated and contained? Does the pain always
end?
Does the pain of fibromylagia or the pain experienced
by amputees to their phantom leg provide any useful warning for the
individual?
Studies show that many individuals are able to
control their sensations of pain by using hypnotic techniques. The
benefits include the ability to reduce medication, better rest and
healing and a greater sense of control. The methods used to attain
the hypnoanalgesic effect varies with the patient and can be
customized based on hypnotizability, condition, age, receptivity and
mental condition. The power of the mind to control these sensations
is nothing short of profound and has applications in many settings.
For the elderly who experience chronic pain, for the
victims of illnesses that attack the body and for individuals who
plan or have had surgery the impact can be terrific. As more and
more studies are conducted we are able to learn about the effects
and benefits of hypnosis without fully understanding how it works.
ELECTIVE SURGERY
In the case of elective surgery it has been shown
that anxiety is reduced, surgery time is reduced, medication
requirements are reduced and healing time is reduced. What’s wrong
with that?
